Title “I Am Here”

“I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in”.
-John Muir

In this work I am exploring and reflecting on my own experience and emotions of walking in the landscape.   I want to convey a sense of encountering and confronting the elemental ‘beingness’ of the landscape.

I am drawn to things happening in the area around the objects – the negative space.  I paint the ceramics with underglaze, and apply contours, paths, map signs on the clay before firing with a transparent glaze.

In the painting, colour is used intuitively.   I use large brush strokes, scrape back and splatter until I am happy with the surface.   In my painting the canvas is stitched to signify the walk and the thread is left to give the impression that the walk continues, a meditation to an inner life.

In challenging our perception of spatial awareness, I encourage the viewer to look at the space between.
